WHAT TO PACK WHEN TRAVELLING TO OZ

You have been accepted into your course

Your also have a room ready and your new host is waiting for you.

You are now ready to start packing your bags / luggage. BUT WHAT TO PACK?

We’ve put together a list of things you could possibly want or need when you are travelling to study in Australia.

Most of the things are essential. In this way you will not have spend any money as soon as you arrive in Down Under.

Most importantly we are listing items that are NOT going to be included in your student house / package.

However, please do remember you will find most (if not all) of these items in your new city.
If for some reason they don’t fit in the bag, or you forget something it’s not a big drama.
You can either buy them easily or the people that you will live with at your new student house will be able to share or help you with.

 

TOP PRIORITY (DO NOT FORGET TO PACK ANY OF THESE)

  • Travel documents
    • passport
    • student visa approved (if you are coming to study in OZ for more than 3 months)
    • itinerary
    • plane tickets
    • Australian home address & details
    • credit cards
    • Photo ID (Drivers License, ISIC card)
  • AU$500 cash (Enough for 1 week -not counting rent fees in your student house-)
  • Laptop & charger
  • Mobile phone, cords and charger (Load offline Google Maps & Uber app in case you get lost)
  • Power adapters (refer to How electricity in Australia works)

ESSENTIALS (TRY TO PACK ALL OF THESE ITEMS)

  • Enough prescription drugs (including dr. documentation) for the length of your stay (check you are allowed to bring them into the country).
  • Backpack (for daily use) – use as carry-on when travelling throughout OZ.
  • Noise cancelling headphones
  • Earplugs
  • Toiletries (just in case) Shampoo/Conditioner
  • Toothbrush/toothpaste
  • Soap
  • Deodorant
  • Disposable razors (and other shaving supplies)
  • Hair brush/Comb/hair ties
  • Tissues
  • Contact lenses and solution
  • Nail clippers and nail file
  • Sunscreen (very important in Australia)
  • Makeup and Feminine Products

CLOTHING/SHOES (PACK ALL OF THESE)

The amount depends on the length of your studies. We recommend you have enough for 1-2 week’s worth of clothing before you have to do washing.

  • Jeans/Khakis (3) -[girls include 2 skirts]
  • Belt (1-2)
  • Jumpers/Hoodies (3-4)
  • T-shirts (7-10)
  • Long sleeve (better if they are non-iron) shirts (2-3)
  • Underwear (7-10)
  • Pajamas (2). Wear one/wash one
  • Shorts (2-3)
  • Swimmers (at least 2 of them)
  • Warm slippers (it gets cold during winter)
  • Socks (7-10) Perhaps take a couple of thick ones for winter time.
  • Exercise clothing (2-3)
  • Thermal underwear (just in case. Especially if you are going to Hobart, Melbourne or Adelaide)
  • Coat (1-2)
  • Rain jacket (1)
  • Formal outfit (dress pants/skirt/dress)
  • For interviews/special occasions.
  • Formal shoes (1)
  • Walking shoes/runners (2-3)
  • Thongs /flip flops) (1-2)
  • Beenie/scarf (for the cold seasons)

WISH LIST (IF THESE DON’T FIT IT WON’T BE A BIG DRAMA)

  • Gifts for your host family. Try to get gifts typical from your home country  (this will apply if you are staying at a homestay but not at a student house).
  • Travel books (loaded in your phone)
  • Music (loaded in your phone)
  • Umbrella (small)
  • Watch
  • Sunglasses
  • Thin lightweight (dry microfiber) towel
