No other creature represents Australia better than an adorable Koala. These animals are native to the country and are part of a rich diversity of fauna and flora found in the continent. Despite their popularity, there are still some things you may not know about these delightful animals.

Here are 5 fun facts about the koala:

1. Koalas are picky eaters. They only ever eat eucalyptus leaves! Despite this fussiness, they can actually consume up to 1 kilogram of leaves each day. They also only eat 50 out of 700 eucalyptus species—that’s only 7%!
2. Koalas sleep during most parts of the day. These cuties can sleep up to 18 hours a day! The rest of the time they are awake is spent on eating, of course. The koala’s sleep pattern can be blamed on their nutrient-poor diet of eucalyptus. This requires them to sleep more to get more energy.
3. Koalas have strong butts. Yep, that’s what evolution provides for them as creatures living among trees. The end of their curved spine is supported by a strong cartilage. This allows them to hang around on trees all day long.
4. Koalas cannot be spotted everywhere in Australia. Despite being the animal’s mascot, these marsupials can only actually be found along the coastlines of New South Wales, South Australia, Queensland, and Victoria.
5. Koalas are suffering from deforestation. Sadly, many of the koalas homes get destroyed by tree-clearing expeditions. The devastating bush fires of 2019 also killed over 1.25 billion animals, many of whom are unique to Australia.

While the situation may seem hopeless, koalas actually symbolize Australia’s hope to recover from this tremendous loss. The first step is spreading awareness on environmental causes that care for these animals.
