Research suggests that stress can be good

stress is good for your career

“A little stress can help you in your career”

We have heard plenty of times that stress is extremely harmful for our health.

It creates sleep disturbances, muscle tension, headache, gastrointestinal problems, and fatigue.
Our mind is just focusing and worrying on scenarios that may never happen.

Due to all these things, stress has always been perceived as a negative word.

However, recently a new study that was released on ResearchGate changed our perspective about stress.
According to this new study, a little stress can actually be beneficial for your career.

During the research, psychologists monitored people with “high levels of stress” such as law students.
This was being done whilst the student were waiting for their results.
During the waiting period of four months, those law students were surveyed every two weeks.

The psychologists were able to find out their levels of stress and how the stress affected them in their daily lives until they got their exam results.
According to the study:

  • the students who were extremely stressed about their results performed better when the results were out, irrespective of the results being good or bad.
  • If the students who were extremely stressed passed the bar exam results, they were happier and more enthusiastic than the people who were not so much stressed.
  • On the other hand, if the students who were extremely stressed failed the bar exam results, they were much better prepared to handle the failure than the ones who were not so much stressed.
Despite failure, those students had some productive ideas of what they should do next.

Therefore, from this study, we get the evidence that stress is not always hazardous to your career.
It definitely has some benefits too.
Stress prepares you to handle things in a better and pragmatic way, which can benefit you in the long-run.

Generally, people look at stress as a very negative word, but, depending on how you look at things stress too has some positive thing.

Check out the TED video (below) from Kelly McGonical.
She mentions that new research suggests that stress may only be bad for you IF you believe that is the case.
She urges us to see stress as a positive.
Interesting.
