According to Juan Camilo Reyes, there are 4 strategies you can try for a successful negotiation. In this episode of TIPS, Juan Camilo Reyes shares useful advice on getting what you want.

The first thing you need to do is to understand the game. Rules and expectations need to be set. You must also learn the laws and rules (both spoken and unspoken) of the country you are negotiating in. The habits and cultural customs of a place count as well.

Next, you have to know what you want. What is the best outcome or ideal scenario you are aiming for? And, just as important, what is the bare minimum you’re willing to deal with? Knowing these will allow you to gauge what you are willing to give or take.

Preparation is key. When dealing with Australians, keep in mind that you will be talking to some very straightforward people. They thrive in a democratic and horizontal structure. With that knowledge, consider how you should proceed.

Lastly, you need to establish good connections. Learn from other people’s experiences, particularly their mistakes. Getting acquainted with those already at the top of their game will help you negotiate better.

These are just a few negotiation strategies for international students. We hope you learned a lot. Best of luck!
